Dave Dabner

Signature Landscapes is proud to announce Dave Dabner has joined their commercial landscape management division. A farm boy from Willows, CA, Mr. Dabner has devoted his career to the landscape industry; from managing nurseries and irrigation supply firms, to managing municipal parks for the City of Orville. He ran his own Northern California landscape operation for 16 years before moving to Reno more than a decade ago.

His leadership in the industry includes past president of the Nevada Landscape Association (NLA), holds a C-27 Landscaping Contractor license (CA), holds a Qualified Commercial Applicator Certification (CA), and is a certified paver with an ICPI certification.

Mr. Dabner helped usher in the newer, more refreshing California Style of landscape to the Truckee Meadows. Key introductions included a larger plant palette that was colorful throughout the seasons, and smart landscape designs to help reduce ever-increasing maintenance expenses. His efforts also helped bring smarter water management programs to our larger properties where he has been a driving force for water conservation ever since.

Signature is proud to welcome Mr. Dabner into the umbrella of Signature’s premium services.

Signature Landscapes Sweeps Top Awards At Nevada Landscape Association Gala

Local landscaper, Signature Landscapes, was the recipient of the most prestigious award for Northern Nevada landscapers; the President’s Award, for their work at the renowned Schaffer’s Mill Sports Complex in Truckee, California. Receiving the award during the Nevada Landscape Association’s annual award gala, was Tim Laskowski, construction manager for the landscape contractor.

"It’s been an extremely busy year for Signature, and this award really goes out to our guys who put their blood, sweat and tears in this property," said Laskowski. "And to win for such an incredibly beautiful building, it makes it that much more satisfying."

Signature’s installation team was responsible for all aspects of hardscape (paver and stonework) around the entire complex including the pool area and the extensive labyrinth of pathways throughout the 7.4-acre clubhouse village. The complex includes a pool, hot springs bathing area, several restaurants, a sports shop, large fitness center and Schaffer’s Square, a community gathering spot.

The company’s work for the sports complex was also recognized for several other outstanding awards. Signature was awarded 1st Place for the Hardscape Installation category;  receiving a perfect 10 on the scoring chart – an achievement rarely seen in the award’s history.

The Schaffer’s Mill work also received the Environmental Award for acute awareness for building water efficient and environmentally balanced landscapes that do not sacrifice the quality of the design nor the quality of life for the project overall.

Finally, the company also took home the Large Commercial Installation for the project.

“We’ve never seen one of our projects sweep the top of the field like the Schaffer’s Mill project,” said Laskowski. “It’s a testament to every facet of our installation team, from our guys in the trenches to the managers running the big picture, they really stepped up and took this landscape to heart!”

Signature Landscapes was the recipient of several other awards at the event such as their first place work for Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, and a number of residential homes. The company was awarded the President’s Trophy last year for their work on the large Shakespeare Ranch property in Glenbrook, Tahoe.

Lebo Newman featured in American Nurseryman Magazine

Lebo Newman, one of Signature Landscapes’ owners was quoted in the latest American Nurseryman Magazine.

“We absolutely use [an award] as a marketing tool. We look at it as an honor bestowed by our peers. The judges are always peers in our industry, so they know the industry. If our competition is going to deem us worthy of an award, that speaks highly of our work. We feel that if we prove ourselves with that group, then it’s an excellent verification of what we’re trying to do.”

“Landscape professionals who become certified are recognized for having the high level of industry knowledge plus the experience to do a great job,” Stanhouse said of the certification process.

Signature Wins Best Safety Program at BANNer Awards

In 2007 the leadership of Signature Landscapes identified a number of strategies required to put our company mission and core values into action. With a full staff of 200-plus laborers working with dangerous tools and equipment every day, it was quickly decided substantial success would be achieved through the development and implementation of a robust, company-wide Safety Education and Enforcement program.

Specifically we wanted to address and provide credence to the two following:

1) Excerpt from our mission statement:
Providing innovative landscape solutions, enriching our community with service though valued and exceptional employees with a commitment to influential industry leadership.

2) Excerpt from our core values:

  1. Teamwork made up of exceptional employees with quality and pride in their work
  2. Create opportunity for personal, professional and company growth
  3. To have a profitable company to build value, and ensure our future
  4. Be the industry leader in all that we do

Fewer Accidents, Lower EMR (MOD rate), Lower Lost-Day Rates

> Constant safety message hits home the value of a Zero-Injury workplace

Our safety program is centered on two key areas: Accident Prevention and Safety Education.

Accident prevention is considered a primary importance in all phases of operation and administration. To ensure these goals are met, procedures have been put into place and are enforced daily since program inception.

Safety education comes in a variety of formats and frequencies. Due to the transient nature of our employee pool, a simple education program has paid off and safety continues to be a top training topic every season.  Each new topic is hand delivered weekly to every employee and followed up with a manager’s discussion and overview of the subject.

Topics are prioritized by historical recurrence as well as event driven. For example, just 18 months ago, a tragic accident occurred on a local freeway (not Signature related) where a couch flew off of a trailer only to cause a horrible accident and loss of life. The next business day our teams were instructed in the proper tie-down procedures for large loads.

Insurance-related claims have dropped 20%  and hospital visits due to accidents are down 45% since 2008. Automotive incidents have substantially decreased since the program launch. Employees can quickly reference any safety topic or procedure by reviewing a complete Safety Reference binder in each division’s ready-room. Signage is also posted around the building to alert and educate employees on key safety topics.
